poetry by Rudi Moffitt

Destiny

4:38 AM
he whispers
"my dreams are not my own"
slips on the overcoat
he bought in Istanbul
when we were teenagers
walks down the unlit hallway
to the idling car outside

in the silence
of the empty house
I put on the black dress
loosely braid my hair
light the stove for tea
only when my hands
remove two cups from
the shelf do I start to cry
